What Happen to Good People?

Last night I was messing around with my FaceBook and while I still feel the user interface is too busy, I love the ability to push content through other social media sites. After watching a funny Slide/YouTube video my friend posted on my fullwall, I clicked through to YouTube, sorted by views and lmao for another 30 minutes watching other videos. At this point, I'm sucked into TheTube and I login and start adding to my favorites. Soon after this I found Oprahs video and her public announcement of disliking her pastor because he preached about a jealous God. Then I started reading the comments and someone referred to her as the "N" word. More and more I'm seeing crazy comments on blogs, forums and social media sites. Last night I met up with a SEOer and he mentioned how posting to forums is dangerous and can make you feel like an idiot. Then this morning I was watching Whiteboard Fridays at SEOmoz and Rand said the same exact thing. Are these obnoxious, rude and miserable forum users and commenter's the mean kids from school? Do these mean kids feel better about themselves when they make others feel inferior and lacking mental and physical alertness? I think so! I mean come on now; can't we all just get along?

Your SEOer friend is right.

Your SEOer friend is right. While forums can be great when properly moderated, they are also open invitations to anyone with a bone to pick. Youtube is a good example of why moderation is soooo important. The intellectual dregs of society can log on and post all sorts of racist and bigoted junk and there really isn't anyone to clean it up. This is why even simple commenting is frightening to companies looking to develop online communities. Who wants to advertise on a site that displays racist or just ignorant comments. Possibly even more frightening is the need to pay someone a salary to moderate those comments.
