All to often as I sit in front of my computer relaxed in non-work mode I begin the tedious task of looking for products and services that would interest a person like me that appreciates eye-engaging web 2.0 graphics representing each product and or service. I visit website after website swiftly clicking "exit" as quickly as I came as if my hand had just touched a searing hot stove-top burner. The depths at which my eyes will go to roll backward into the sockets of my head to avoid the permanent etching of a bad website into the fragile lenses of my eyes is almost too much to write about. The ever-gleaning question at the forefront of my thoughts is "who the hell built these websites and how could the clients be satisfied with such crap? You all know what I am talking about, the sites built in Frontpage 10 years ago that looked like crap even then. Ya, those sites!
Along time ago, it occurred to me like a flash of lightning from the sky specifically crafted just for me, what these sites are missing. Value!
It's not enough anymore to just display information or products. Viewers want to be enticed, we want "things" to jump out at us. We want our attention grabbed as if a hand had came through the screen, grabbed our neck tie and jerked us closer. And not only do we want our attention peaked, we want discounts, free stuff, add-ons and of course "Free Shipping". Some have this down pat while others are clambering to get caught up. Lets look at a method that could do a lot of good for the website owner and potential customers.
What is a Value Proposition? A value proposition is an analysis and quantified review of the benefits, costs and value that an organization can deliver to customers and other constituent groups within and outside of the organization. It is also a positioning of value, where Value = Benefits - Cost (cost includes risk).
Value Propositions on the Home Page of the site does wonders for several reasons. Lets take a look at a few advantages.
- it allows us to entice consumers with savings
- providing a free report will help build email lists
- can encourage the return of consumers
- may very well have your visitors recommending your site to family and friends
- depending on how its displayed, it may just reach up and grab their attention
Websites that display their value proposition in a manner in which it's one of the first things you see when you enter the website, stand to have higher visitor retention, better follow through on conversion and goals and you will have an overall decrease in bounce rate.
In Summary: Creating a Value Proposition on your Home Page has several key benefits that may drastically increase traffic to website, drive targeted traffic to targeted pages as well as lending itself to building lists of potential customers in the future. With the daily increase of internet companies competing for top rank, once someone clicks on your site you want to keep the visitor and convert that visit into a sale or long-term client. Either way you go, in the long run you site will fair better.
